Free assistance for veterans, ADF members & their families A free legal service for veterans and Defence members has marked its first anniversary by boosting the assistance it provides to them. In the past year more than 1,000 people have been helped across Australia by the Defence and Veterans Legal Service (DAVLS). This service provides free, confidential and independent legal support to people who want to share their story with the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. Key dates Submissions to the Royal Commission must be received by October 13 of this year. But if you want to have a private one-on-one session with a Royal Commissioner, you must submit your request by April 28 of this year. DAVLS also helps with issues relating to veterans’ entitlements and other legal problems commonly experienced by current and former ADF members. For free, independent legal support, call 1800 33 1800 or visit DefenceVeteransLegalService.org.auIn response to high levels of demand, we are increasing the support we provide to current and former ADF members – and their families,” says Jasmine Stanton, a former Navy officer and Army Reservist who is now the Director of DAVLS. “Our legal help is free and confidential – and it’s completely independent. We don’t work for the Royal Commission, or the Defence Department, or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. “We help people share their story with the Royal Commission in an informed and safe way that protects their rights and ensures their voice is heard. “Real change can happen when people are empowered to speak up.” DAVLS provides tailored legal advice about issues including:
How good is this community? We are regularly heartened by the support and generosity of our fellow Hedlanders.
Huge thanks to all that attended the Blue Table event and in particular Hedland Psychologists, Lisa’s Kangaroo Retreat, David Eckhartand the good folks from the Walkabout Hotel. The $2,080 raised for us on the night will greatly assist with setting up the Shed in time for swinging the gates open before the end of this year. We are very happy to report that issues affecting access to proposed Men's Shed site have been resolved!
Big shout out and thank you to all those who lobbied, petitioned or lodged objections on our behalf. Your vocal support has helped to achieve this positive outcome and demonstrates the communities passion for ensuring Hedland gets its Men's Shed. We are grateful to HiCON, the Port Hedland International Airport and the Town of Port Hedland for their efforts in identifying an alternative solution that is workable for all parties, reaffirming their support and belief in the value of the Men's Shed. Next steps - signing the lease and then hopefully "swinging the gates open" to the shed before the end of this year. The old Rider's club just past the Walky on Great Northern Hwy.

The committee are busy working on finalising the lease and ensuring the site is safe for our members before we open. Get out amongst it .. a few of our members volunteer for meat raffles at The Hedland PUB to help raise some dollars.
Sometimes members and mates support other Hedland events like such as Rowans Walk - (In 2018 a young fella set out on a march to remember a loved one who took her own life, the following year hundreds turned up to take part in the walk.) PLUS Lions Skin Check Clinic, Pshycs on Bikes & more... Shoulder to shoulder men connect with mates new and old to tackle the world.
Simple no pressure get togethers with other blokes. WE NEED tradies, labourers, welders, painters, plumbers ... geeks even plus every other profession to help plan, design and build this shed. You can just turn up to events or become a member from $5. We want your input! Come and enjoy a good times meet and eat and share the bad if you want, no pressure - everything is better when shared with a mate. It's been a tough world the last few years, stress, financial problems, separation, etc etc. We try and balance things with BBQ's plus other FUN. But bring your ideas! Just turn up and see for yourself.
