A Word from the Chair
A significant milestone was reached in FY23 – the long-awaited securing of a location for the Hedland Men’s Shed. On the 24 July 2023 the HMS signed a sub-lease with the Port Hedland International Airport giving the HMS tenancy over the Former Riders Club for an initial period of three years, with a provision to extend. This milestone has been over five years’ in the making and it is a credit to the commitment of the HMS committee and the incredible support from all of our supporters. With a location finally secured, our focus for FY24 will be on completing all works necessary to open a fit-for-purpose space for the men of the Hedland community, one that is safe, inclusive, where we can build, learn and grow together. With respect to the lease, I would like to offer a special thanks to the Town of Port Hedland, particularly Josephine Bianci, and the Port Hedland International Airport. FY24 and FY25 will be exciting years for the HMS where we will work to establish our shed, expand our membership and continue to grow our presence and positive impact within the community. I would like to thank the efforts of the committee through FY23 and look forward to working together to build a great Men’s Shed for the Hedland community (hopefully sooner rather than later). Achievements in FY23
Community Engagement The HMS committee has focused its efforts on first securing a location for the Men’s Shed, and now, to opening a safe, fit-for-purpose space. Community engagement has been intentionally kept to a minimum to limit raising expectations, negative perceptions of the HMS committee, and overall disappointment until the space is open. The HMS committee intend to activate community engagement in FY25. Supporters and Grants
Membership Membership for the HMS was understandably low given the development phase we are in. The HMS membership in FY23 was limited to it’s committee:
Financial Report for FY23 As at 30 June 2023, the HMS’s closing equity was $57,865.08. The HMS’s net profit for FY23 was $9,251.79, which was primarily earned through refunds from the containers for change scheme. Breakdowns of income and expenditure and equity are provided in the HMS Treasurers Report. Shane Hashim Hedland Men’s Shed Chair |
